Spring flowers are such a welcome sight after a long, cold winter. I love spotting the very first sprouts in late winter, and watching them mature into a beautiful array of flowers over the next few months.

Many spring flowers are bulbs, corms or tubers that are best planted in the fall season. There are many types available, but I like to stick to my tried and true favorites. In this post, I’ll share my four favorite fall plantings for beautiful spring flowers.

Daffodils

Daffodils are often the first flowers to bloom in spring.

When it comes to cheery spring flowers, who doesn’t love daffodils? These wonderful flowers are often the first to bloom in spring, long before many of the others. There are many varieties available, from classic yellow single blooms to miniature, ruffled, double-bloomed and multi-colored. They are hardy and pest resistant perennials, coming back year after year with little to no attention needed. Truly a plant it and forget it type of flower!

Tulips

Tulips are one of the most popular spring cut flowers, and for good reason.

Tulips are one of the most popular spring cut flowers, and for good reason. These beautiful flowers come in a variety of colors and bloom types, but my favorites are the traditional single, cup-shaped blooms. Tulips are perennials, but they need cold winters and dry summers. In many climates, they decline after their first year, which is why many gardeners and farmers treat them like annuals and plant new bulbs every fall. Tulips are not deer resistant, though, so make sure to plant them in a protected location.

Iris

Iris come in a spectacular array of unusual color combinations.

Few plants are as hardy as Iris, at least in my experience. They are deer and pest resistant and multiply readily when conditions are optimal. Their foliage is evergreen, meaning that the plant stays green year-round, while flowering is usually in late spring. They come in a spectacular array of unusual color combinations if you shop online, but you might just find a neighbor who’s ready to part with some and get them for free.

Peonies

Peonies are often touted as the "queen of spring", and who could argue! These lovely flowers are large and pillowy, ruffled blooms that come in a variety of colors but most often shades of pink, red and white.

Peonies are often touted as the “queen of spring”, and who could argue! These lovely flowers are large and pillowy, ruffled blooms that come in a variety of colors but most often shades of pink, red and white. They are very long lasting plants, known to bloom for decades in the same location, often becoming a treasured garden heirloom. Peonies are considered deer resistant, although I’ve had deer nibble on some peony stems before. Although they often don’t bloom their first year, they are well worth the wait! They make absolutely gorgeous cut flowers if you want to bring a bouquet inside, or just enjoy them in the garden. The plants will need staking, as the blooms are quite heavy.

Well, that’s it for my list of favorite fall plantings for beautiful spring flowers. If you’re looking to buy online, Floret Flowers has a great list of where to buy. What is your favorite spring flower? Let me know in the comments below!
