When you’re on the go and need a quick breakfast or snack, overnight oats are an easy and delicious food that can be made ahead of time. Just mix a few ingredients in a mason jar the night before, refrigerate, and you will have breakfast ready to go the next morning.

What Are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats are just classic old-fashioned oats, mixed with milk and refrigerated overnight. They are not cooked, but rather the soaking process over several hours makes them soft like regular cooked oats. Although enjoyed cold instead of hot like regular oatmeal, they have a similar taste and texture.

Many different “toppings” can be added to the oat mixture. Nuts, seeds, nut butters, dried fruit, and even fresh fruit, to name a few. Any kind of milk can be used, even non-dairy milk; however, I like to use regular whole milk for this recipe.

The oats can also be sweetened. I like to use maple syrup as a natural sweetener, but you could also try honey or even brown sugar.
