I love making coffee at home. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee first thing in the morning is hard to beat. Especially on these early summer mornings, when the sun comes up around 6. However, if I don’t get that hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning when it’s still cool (or I’m looking for round 2!), this Iced Honey Lavender Latte has been my go-to iced coffee drink for summer.

While I love visiting a good local coffee shop, we don’t have one here. So, I have to recreate that coffee shop flavor here at home. Here are my top tips for making your best cup of coffee at home.

Tips for Making the Best Coffee at Home

use freshly ground coffee beans for the best coffee at home.
1. Use Freshly Ground Beans

Call me a bit of a coffee snob, but I like to use freshly ground beans. Yes, I grind the beans fresh every morning. It’s an extra step that takes maybe 30 seconds, but can really amp up the flavor of your coffee at home.

2. Buy High Quality Coffee

This one seems like a no-brainer, but the Folgers has got to go. I try to buy organic beans whenever possible. This is my current favorite – it’s also available at the Costco we shop at.

3. Use Good Water

While I’m often guilty of using tap water for the convenience, unchlorinated filtered water will produce the best tasting results.

4. Ditch the Coffee Maker

Sorry, Mr. Coffee…but we’re breaking up. While most of us don’t have a full blown espresso machine at home, a French press is a simple and affordable option that produces immensely better flavor than a traditional coffee maker. It does require a little more effort than pressing a button or setting a timer, but I promise you the results are worth it.

Tools to Make Iced Honey Lavender Latte

Making an iced latte at home is pretty straightforward, but a few tools can make the process even easier. Here are the tools I use to make an iced honey lavender latte at home.

Coffee Grinder

French Press

HyperChiller Beverage Cooler – this little gadget is amazing! It chills down your hot coffee in a minute or two. That way, you’re not diluting your coffee trying to chill it down with ice!

Ingredients for Iced Honey Lavender Latte

Dried lavender flowers – food grade, organic whenever possible

Honey – I like to use raw honey, local if possible

Coffee beans – whole bean, organic whenever possible

Water – unchlorinated, filtered water if possible

Ice

Cream – milk or half and half works too, but I prefer the richness of cream

How to Make Honey Lavender Simple Syrup

To make the honey lavender syrup, you will need:

  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender flowers
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons boiling water

Combine all ingredients, stir well to dissolve the honey. Let this mixture steep for 10-15 minutes. The longer it steeps, the more lavender flavor the syrup will have. Strain the syrup into a small mason jar and store in the fridge for up to a week.

How to Make a Honey Lavender Iced Latte

First, brew your coffee. My method for the French press is 2 tablespoons of coffee beans per 8 oz serving, so for a 16 ounce latte I use about a quarter cup of whole beans. To recreate that coffee shop flavor, you’ll need strong coffee.

Coarsely grind the beans, place in the French Press, and add 16 ounces of boiling water. Stir, cover and let brew about 5 minutes. Then, press and pour straight into the HyperChiller cooler. If you don’t have a beverage cooler, just pour the coffee into a glass to let cool on the counter, or place in the fridge at least 30 minutes.

Once your coffee is chilled, grab a clean glass and add your honey lavender syrup. I like about 2 tablespoons of syrup for a 16 ounce latte. Not too sweet, but just enough.

Pour in the cooled coffee and stir well. Then, add a few ice cubes and top with cream. Stir well and enjoy!
